Recently we did this new cedar shake installation on a gazebo near Raleigh. It came out beautiful! There is a difference between cedar shakes and cedar shingles, and we have installed both plenty of times.

Many years ago, cedar shingles were cut with a saw, and cedar shakes were split off of a block using a mallet and a wedge. These days, shingles are milled and more precise. Even shakes are usually made by machines these days, but they are usually grooved by machines to give them a hand split appearance. Shakes give cottages, gazebos, and other buildings a rustic appearance.

Cedar shakes are a bit irregular. Improperly installed this can cause water damage. When installing cedar shakes we use a layer of water resistant paper during this type of roof installation.

We do make plenty of minor roofing repairs and we are always up for roofing jobs. To learn more about having us install cedar shakes, shingles, or do any other work around your home please visit our home improvement page.
