Want some extra time and money? Sure! Who doesn’t?! Here is a simple tip most people have never thought of that will absolutely save you lots of time and money.
Keep your deck clean! I know, it sounds too good to be true. But it is! We build new custom decks for customers in the triangle area. We just replaced one in Garner recently that probably could have lasted a few more years if it were kept a tad bit cleaner.
When dirt and debris is left on a deck it traps moisture. Wood + moisture = bad. Moisture rots wood. When wood rots the screws and nails come loose, planks rot, structural joints need to be replaced, and sometimes the entire deck needs to be replaced.
The dirt between the planks is one of the biggest killers of decks! You can use water, although don’t repeatedly soak your deck because it may add to the problem. A flathead screwdriver or something else that is flat and skinny may be used to clean in between the planks on your deck. When dirt and/or debris is between the planks it absolutely holds moisture in. When the spaces between the planks are nice and clean water can run right through when it rains out and air can circulate between the planks removing moisture.
