Many people underestimate how much water an average gutter system needs to handle during a rain storm. Rain drops are so tiny that it’s difficult to imagine how much they add up to when they all flow together.

In the gutter installation industry, we’ve done the math. There’s a basic formula that we use to estimate how much rain water a roof will collect base how big it is. For every 1000 square feet of roof that receives one inch of rain, 620 gallons of water will flow through the gutters.

To put that into perspective, the average city issued garbage can that gets wheeled down the driveway once a week on trash day hold about 60 gallons of water. Ten of those filled to the brim wouldn’t be able to hold that much rain water.

And that’s only a single inch of rain! In North Carolina, it’s not unusual to have storms where an inch of rain can happen in a single hour. On days that it rains all day long, 3-6 inches of rain is not unheard of. In other words, that a lot of trash cans filled with water.

With a better understanding of how much water is hitting your roof, you can appreciate how important it is to protect your house and it’s foundation by installing high quality gutters.
