We’ve all seen it. It is raining out and a gutter is just dumping water out and all over the ground. We’ve been using gutters over 5,000 years and overflowing gutters are still an issue for many people. But, they don’t have to be. An overflowing gutter can be annoying or lead to more serious problems such as foundation damage. Below we’ll cover some of the things that cause overflowing gutters.

Clogged Gutters
Birds, squirrels, and bees build nests in gutters leading to clogs, however, the most common clogs we see are from pine needles and leaves. Many people clean their gutters out once or twice per year. With Gutterglove products installed on their gutters they no longer need to perform this tedious and dangerous task ever again. In the worst cases people even have gutter trees.

Clogged Downspouts
Most downspouts have angles and bends in them. This is where sticks, leaves, pine needles and other debris get clogged. When the downspout is clogged water can not go where it is supposed to go. It then fills up the downspout and stands in the gutter. When it rains, the water overflows. Water follows the path of least resistance. If it can not go down the downspout it often overflows at or near the lowest point in your gutter.

Not enough downspouts
Roofing collects a LOT of water. One inch of rain falling on 1000 square feet of roof displaces 600 gallons of rain water. If there are not enough downspouts on your gutter, it again follows the path of least resistance. There is never a good place around the foundation of your home for this much water to come splashing down.
