What is good gutter pitch?
Gutter pitch is a pretty simple idea. You need to use gravity to get the water to roll “downhill” to your downspouts.
The pitch (or angle) doesn’t have to be sharp but it also can’t be too sharp. If it’s not pitched enough then the water can’t move down and it will pool in your gutters and eventually damage them.
If it’s pitched too much, then you face the prospect of splashover. That’s exactly what it sounds like: the water will move too fast and splash over the edge of your gutter. Too much slope equals slop. Plus it just looks bad.
Typically contractors set the slope at ¼ of an inch for every ten feet of gutter. So a 25-foot section of gutter means the downspout side will be a 5/8 inch lower than the other end.
How do we determine how to set gutter slope? Typically it’s with a string level. First, understand where the downspout will go. Run the string from one end to the other and find out the length you’ll need for the gutters.
Measure the string to calculate your required slope. Let’s use the 25-foot gutter again, going from left to right with the downspout going on the right end: the right end will be exactly 5/8 lower than the left. A string level’s string is stored with chalk. So when your markings are correct, simply pull the taut string and snap it. You now have the line upon which to install the gutter.
